Problem solving

What is problem solving and does it only happen in maths?
Problem solving is finding out the best strategies to use when trying to find an answer to a question. Problem solving also means learning new maths  knowledge and finding a solution to something .

Problem solving doesn't only happen in maths it can happen anywhere problem solving can happen at home when you're trying to solve something to do with homework or if you are at the shops and you're trying to figure out how much money you need or how much you have, problem solving can happen outside of maths too.
This morning I did maths quick writes, maths quick writes is when there is a maths question and we have to answer the question and write a paragraph about it. Today the question I did what is problem solving and does it only happen in maths. Problem solving is finding different solutions to questions or problems,in my opinion I think that problem solving doesn't only happen in maths it can happen any where for a example at the shops you are doing problem solving by figuring out how much you need to by a item or how much you have.  The reason why we do maths quick writes is because so we can better at telling other people what we did to solve an answer in maths.

Out these flags the one that got the most votes was the silver fern red white and blue flag which got 87 votes out of 232 kids. The second one that got the most votes was the blue and black fern which got 60 votes and I also voted for that one. The third was the silver fern black and white which got 50 votes and then the red peak which got 25 votes and the last one that only had 10 votes was the black and white koru pattern.Image result for the five nz flags

Choosing a new flag

Using google drawing my group and I made this DLO about choosing a new flag.   morning my class did 4,3,2,1 the way this works is we got 4 minutes to read the information about all of the five chosen flags, then we had three minutes to find a partner and talk about the flags we like, and give them a reason why, when we did  that the we had two minutes to talk with a different partner about the one flag we like and 1 minute to get into a group of four explain to each other why we liked that one flag and give me a reason.
Out of the 5 flags the one I like best is the silver fern (black, white and blue)
the reason why is because I can see my culture shown in the flag and because I think the flag will good shown around the world and it is easy to be recognise as a NZ flag because of the fern.

Transum

Today I practised my time tables by playing a game on transum called table master out of the questions they asked me I got one wrong. Transum is a good maths learning site where you can go and play maths games to help you get better at maths. Today I practised my eleven times table

Maths questions

What questions that you have asked or heard someone else ask have helped you in maths?

Don’t be scared to come up and ask for extra help?
Don’t be afraid to ask questions?
Can you explain your thinking ?
Do you know what that is.
Do you get what I mean?
What strategy should I use?
Can you say it in a easier way so I can understand?
Can you help me?
Do you want be to explain in more detail?
Does this make sense to you?
Do you need help?
What strategy should I use?
Are there any maths game to help me?
Is there a website we can practice on?
Is there a different way to solve this?
Does this strategy work for me ?
Is this strategy work with bigger numbers?
Do you understand now?
Can you show me an example.
What is the best strategy to use to find the answer to this question?
Does this strategy work for me.
Can you break the strategy down for me?
How did you use your strategy?
Do you know how to solve this
As a class room 5 worked together and asked questions evolving around maths. We did this so we can get more practice talking about how we solve things in maths.

The chime bars is a type of instrument that has metal tuned keys like a glockenspiel. My class was learning how to play a song called "The saints go marching in". Everyone in my class did a really good job on keeping in time with everyone else. We got into groups of two and then four when everyone was in groups of four we had to practise the song together and when we think we were all in time we had to share it with our class. My group was Samantha, Latham, John and me.

Transum

Today for maths  I played a maths game called Beat the clock i'm happy with my score because I only missed six answers. To play the game there are answers you have to answer before you time runs out. But I now know  next time to answer the question a little bit faster and the my score will increase.

Basketball

   Basketball

Today for kiwi sports my class learnt new skill about how to play basketball.
Our coach Mike and Millie helped us to learn different skills we can use while playing basketball. There were skills like learning how to cup the ball and move the ball through your legs we also learnt how to dribble but before we learnt the new skills,we first had to warm up we did sprints, relays we ran keeping our knees high to warm up. We learnt how do a pivot and how to learn to be stand while playing. Something new I learnt is that when were sprinting to keep running on the balls of your feet. The most thing I enjoyed about playing basketball is the skill when you cup the ball with your hands and then passing it under your legs and holding with your other hand.

Story Swap - Courtney and Tiare

Screenshot 2015-10-14 at 12.00.58 PM.png
Surrounded by the dark green trees was an old abandoned house. It looked as if nobody came and cleaned it for many years. I can still hear the rumors about the abandoned house ringing in my ears. As I was staring at the abandoned house I felt like walking towards it. Each step I took up the stairs leading to the house kept creaking under my foot . So when I walked into the house I found a dark staircase heading towards some rooms. I walked up the stairs scared about what might be up there.

When I got upstairs I would see all these doors with no door knobs on them. Some were chipped, some had no paint left on them and one room didn't even have a door. I walked into the first room in front of me and I stared at it for a moment it looked as if dolls were lying all of the bed and there was. I stared at the dolls waiting for something to happen. All of a sudden I heard a loud bang! coming from the closet behind me. I quickly looked over my shoulder but nothing or no one was there.

Once I looked in the closet there was this big doll that I found staring at me in a mysterious way my heart started beating rapidly because I felt unsafe and scared. Once I finished looking at the doll I ran out of the house and went home but when I ran outside it wasn't the same feeling as I felt when I was inside the house for all of a sudden for an unknown reason my body just shut down, by time I woke up it felt like I was sleeping for days, months or even years.

With my partner Tiare, together we wrote a recount about an old abandoned house. We wrote a Story Swap Recount which means that each person writes a sentence each. Something I learnt about writing a recount is that if you read the recount out loud you can hear your mistakes

Today for maths I was practising my time tables with my friend June by playing a multiplication game called the grid challenge to play the game we had two dices that we role and when the dices land on two numbers that was our times table question. When we figured out the answer we had to draw around the amount of squares on the grid and who ever has there grid covered first then they win.

Problem Solving

Today for maths I created a DLO to show a strategy I used to answer  the maths question. The question was (Sajiha read a book with 6003 words in it in 4 weeks. In the first week she read 653 words. In the second week she read 497 words and in the third week she read 1183 words. How many more words did she read in week 4? )To answer this question I first found the total of the numbers, then I added the numbers of words Sajhia read I then used subtraction to find the missing numbers and then I plus the numbers to make sure I had the right answer.

Run Jump Throw

Run  Jump Throw
Today I practised shot put and Discus with our coach Andy she has been showing us new skills on how how to throw  Discus and how to throw a shot put. When we were practising on how to throw a shot put she taught us to hold the ball in your fingers and not in your palm. She told us to remember dirty fingers dirty neck and clean palm. We have to keep the ball just under our ear.
Andy also told us to remember to when we are pulling back the shot put to keep our elbow high and to keep your chin and knee and toes all in a row. In Discus the skills that we learnt is to place the disc in your hand but not to grip it. We also learnt when we are throwing the disc to swing the disc with hand you're holding it with, and the clap the disc on your left hand, pull it back and fling it fast.

Here is a reflection of Run Jump Throw. This term for kiwi sport the seniors have been practising Run Jump Throw.
